Boston Terrier Chewing

Vic posted this problem on the submission page….

“We have 2 Boston Terriers and when we go away for a couple hours the younger one (year and a half old) will chew up things. WHY. The older one(4yrs.old) never has done that so we let the young one lose also and chew chew.
What can we do to stop this behavior ?”

Below is my assessment of the problem and a possible way around it:

From what you have said, this looks like a symptom of separation anxiety.  More often than not, two dogs will keep each other company and avoid the stress and boredom caused by the absence of their owner, but it seems in this case that it is not having the desired effect. Just like people, every dog is different, and it would not be uncommon for two dogs of the same breed to be able to handle separation differently.

To allay the chewing problem, provide him with something that he can chew on – a kong toy or similar is great.  If he chews when you are around or you happen to catch him in the act, correct him with a sharp “agh” sound, then redirect him to the kong and give him praise when he starts to chew it.

The bigger issue to nip in the bud is the possible separation anxiety.  This can take a little time and effort, but you need to build up his confidence about being left in the house without you. Alternate your going out routine (even pretend you are getting ready to go out, then don’t) and then start to leave the house for short periods then come back and act as if you had not been anywhere.  Do not make a fuss of the dog when you leave or for at least 10 minutes when you return.  If he is prone to follow you or another family member round the house, do not let him do it all the time.  Another thing to consider is to make sure you have taken him for a walk prior to leaving.  If you have time, do a little obedience training too (this will mentally stimulate him and help him be more tired – hence more likely to be relaxed – while you are away).  If you are looking for more advanced techniques for dealing with separation anxiety, I would highly recommend you read either Sit Stay Fetch (this comes with an audio version too, which I often listen to in the car) or The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Positive Dog Training
