Dog Jumping Up At Visitors
Dave asked:
“my dog won’t stop jumping up at visitors when they come round to my house. what can I do to get him to stop?”
We replied…
Jumping is a learned behavior. Your dog has learned that he gets attention by jumping up at people. The good thing is it is quite easy to teach him not to!
First things first, though. Is he getting enough exercise? It could also be that he has too much energy and the excitement of visitors gives him a chance to burn some of it off!
Ok, so you have made sure he is getting enough chance to burn some energy. What you need to do now is to show him that jumping no longer gets any attention at all. Your visitors will need to help with this part. When he jumps up at anyone, they should definitely not pet him. Turn your back on him or leave the room. Whenever he greets visitors in a calm manner, praise and treat him.
By the time this has happened to him a few times, he will realise that if he greets you and your guests quietly, he will get some positive attention - if he doesn’t, he is ignored.
A good example of this techique is displayed in this video
