Dog Lunging When on Leash

Pauline T has this problem:

“My dog is constantly pulling on the leash when we are out on our walks. He also lunges at strangers and other dogs. Is there anything I can do to teach him not to do this, preferably without having to use a choke chain. Any advice will be gratefully received. Thankyou”

Here is my suggestion to help stop this difficult behavior…

Ok, lets start of with the control element.  We need to consider what will provide the maximum level of control whilst causing the least amount of distress to your dog.  For this I suggest you purchase a head collar such as the gentle leader.  This should ensure that your dog will always go in the same direction as you, as the collar/haltar is positioned where you dog is less able to resist the pull of the leash.

Practice walking your dog at home or where there are fewer distractions to both get him used to the new collar and for you to get more confident in getting him to walk on a loose leash.  Work on getting him to be better behaved on the leash, then venture to the problem areas where there are other dogs and strangers.

You will next have to work on desensitising him, so he does not get as excited or stressed about the presence of others during your walks. Go to within 20 or 30 feet of another dog to see his reaction.  If he starts to lunge or show signs of excitement, turn and walk in the opposite direction.  When he acts how you want, praise and/or treat him. As he improves, move a little closer, but each time turning away if he is not calm.  Eventually, he will realize that being excitable or aggressive does not get him closer to other dogs and people, and he will approach in a much calmer way.

If he is proving especially difficult, try walking behind the other dog or person (at a safe distance), so he is not directly facing them (less confrontational that way), then over time, get closer and eventually walk alongside them. Eventually, you will find him much more socialble in public.
