Dog Pulling on Leash

Phoebe asked:

“after exercize period (Long walk) my dog is reluctant to return home. Almost have to drag her the whole way. Any advice.”

Our answer…..

It seems that your dog has had so much fun that she doesn’t want it to end, and is trying to delay the journey just to hang on to the feeling for a few more minutes!  You do not mention what breed she is or how many walks she gets a day, so it could be that she either needs to walk more often, or to go for fewer walks, but for longer periods so she gets more of what she sees as “fun” walks and can burn off some excess energy.

If you are only able to fit in one of these long walks, here is a strategy you could try:

  1. Spend a good ten minutes playing with her at home before you take her for her walk.  This will let her know that home is a fun place too.
  2. If you let her off the leash to run, make sure you allow some calm down time back on it before you begin the journey home.
  3. Change your route!  Even if you only deviate slightly, your dog’s natural inquisitive instincts will make her eager to experience the  change of scenery.  Better still, go somewhere completely different then alternate each time you take her for a walk. Dogs, like people, will get bored  of the same-old same-old.

The Dog Problems forum offers some great in-depth advice on issues like this (as well as every other type of dog training).  You do have to be a member  to access the forum though.
