Trouble House Training Daschund Puppy

CJ posted this question on my Squidoo puppy potty training lens:

“I recently got a knew mini dachshund puppy (9 wks. old) although i have never had many problems before potty training dogs, this one is throwing me. have tried newspaper, proper sized crate, and outside every hr. or so. do u have any tips on what i can do or may be doing wrong?”

Here is our reply…

Daschunds have a bit of a reputation for being a difficult breed to train generally. The best thing you can do is persevere with the methods you have tried already and everything should work out fine.

The only additional solution I can suggest above what you are already trying is to use positive reinforcement when your pup goes to the toilet outside. Using a clicker can be really effective in cases like this (once you have taught your dog to respond to it - known as “charging the clicker”)
