Puppy Jumping Up

Susan asked:

“How can I get an 8-month old female puppy to stop jumping on people, on doors, on windows? She has springs in her hind legs.”

A similar question was answered in this post: Dog Jumping Up At Visitors

A lot can be achieved by taking the “fun” out of unwanted behaviors, especially where interaction and play are removed. It is important, too, to make sure your dog is getting enough exercise and mental stimulation.  A lack of either can result in a “hyper” dog, and the longer the behavior goes unchecked (and the cause is not dealt with), the longer it will take to correct.

In Susan’s case, the dog probably needs a little reinforcement of good manners.  In circumstances where the dog gets excited (for instance, what stimulates her to jump at the window - passers by, visitors, other dogs?), teach her an incompatible behavior, such as sit or down.  Each time you think she is going to jump, ask her to sit calmly, then give her praise and a high value treat (food or toy).
